Turenne (1611-1675)
Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne, undated Bronze Tribute Medal, by Giovanni Hamerani, and believed struck at the time of his death.
Laureate and armoured bust of Turenne to left, his hair long, armour with lion shoulder-plates, signed on truncation, rev. Fortune stands between Mars and Justice, VIRTVS HONOS AEQVATAS, 49.5mm (T&V 35; Börner 1285). A superb example, beautifully patinated, choice extremely fine – virtually mint state.
Prince Henri de la Tour d’Auvergne and Turenne was the second son of Henri, Duke of Bouillon and his second wife Elizabeth (who was the daughter of William the Silent, Prince of Orange). He was made a Marshal of France in 1643. In the third of the Dutch Wars he marched with King Louis XIV and Condé into Holland, but in 1672 the French were prevented from entering Amsterdam by the opening of the dikes. On the Rhine, Turenne defeated enemy troops at Sinzheim and ravaged the Palatinate in 1674, however he was killed the following year fighting against the troops of Raimondo, Count of Montecucculi
