Pope Paul II, Pietro Barbo, an excellent example of one of the rare double-portrait medals of Pope Paul II, oval cast bronze medal, undated, by Cristoforo di Geremia. (active in Rome c.1456-1476)

Tonsured bust of the Pope to right, wearing embroidered cope, PAOLO. VENETO. PAPE. [I]I. ITALICE. PACIS. FVNDATORI, and under truncation, ROMA, 44 37mm (Hill, Corpus, 769; Cyril Humphris, European Medals, Pisanello to Soldani, 1446-1710, London, 1993, No 8 – this piece). 
 






Extremely fine, small piercing at top, an excellent contemporary cast with good definition and patination to both sides.
 
Note:  Cristoforo di Gerimia, jeweller and goldsmith, was born in Mantua and became a leading medallist in the Roman School, c. 1456-1476.
